Substrate is the sand or gravel in the bottom of the aquarium that creates the natural ocean appearance.  Marine grade substrate is also effective at buffering pH levels (helping to keep them within normal limits.)  Good substrates for the marine aquarium include crushed coral, dolomite, and aragonite gravel.  You should not use gravel that is intended for freshwater aquariums as it is not an effective buffer like the marine grade substrates are, and it also lacks the natural appearance.

Before putting any substrate in the bottom of your aquarium, you should thoroughly rinse it using buckets to remove any dust that is in it.  We recommend using about two inches of substrate in the bottom of your aquarium.
